Medicare is a health insurance program for people age 65 or older. However, you can qualify for Medicare too, even if you are younger than 65. This is if you are receiving disability or retirement benefits from Social Security Administration or Railroad Retirement Board.
Already have Medicare?
When you already have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), you can also enroll on Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). You can also sign up for a Part D (prescription drug coverage). If you have limited resources and income, you may qualify for Extra Help to pay for the costs.
Signing up for Medicare…
Always remember that you can sign up for just the Medicare Part A since Part B requires additional premium. However, if you decided to not get Part B and would like to sign up for it later on, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
If you’re eligible at age 65, your initial enrollment period begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn age 65, and ends three months after that birthday.
