You can simply enroll in a student health plan. The value of this compared to other options differs based on a number of factors, but do make sure to compare this choice to Oregon Health Plan and Health Insurance Marketplace coverage as often the advantages of cost assistance are unbeatable.
If you go with a student health plan, you should note that only fully insured student health plans have to offer all of ObamaCare’s new benefits, rights, and protections (although they will both protect you from the fee). If that plan doesn’t provide contraceptive services then a third party will administer secondary contraceptive only coverage at no extra charge.
What’s the advantage of having a student health plan?
If your school offers a student health plan, you can have inexpensive coverage. It counts as qualifying health coverage which means you’re considered covered under the health care law, and won’t have to pay the penalty for not having insurance.
Can you apply or stay covered through Health Insurance Marketplace even if you have access to student health plan?
The answer – YES within conditions. You can check on – https://www.healthcare.gov/young-adults/college-students/ to see those conditions.
When you apply, you’ll find out if you qualify for an insurance plan with savings based on your income, or for free or low-cost care through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
One catch: If someone claims you as a tax dependent, you can buy an insurance plan through the Marketplace but won’t qualify for savings based on your income.
If you need to enroll through Health Insurance Marketplace, here are dates to remember:
November 1st: | December 15th: |
Open Enrollment starts: This is the first day you can enroll, re-enroll, or change an insurance plan. | Last day to enroll in or change plans for coverage to start January of the following year. |
