Affordable Care Act Compared to New Healthcare Bill (AHCA)

You probably heard about the new healthcare bill which is also known as the American Health Care Act (AHCA).

Let us briefly explain what this new healthcare bill is all about. The American Health Care Act is a US Congress bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) passed by the House Republicans on May 4, 2017.
  • individual and employer mandate penalties will be abolished
  • calculation of premium taxes will be changed
  • cost sharing subsidies will be terminated
  • insurers can charge seniors (older Americans) five times as much as younger American
  • Medicaid expansion supporting people slightly over the poverty line will be rolled back

Numbers can tell…

AHCA would increase the number of uninsured people by 19 million in 2020 and 23 million in 2026 but would decrease the federal budget deficit by $119 billion over the same period (about 1%). This is mainly by cutting Medicaid coverage for lower income Americans according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Here’s the Senate’s version of the AHCA…

The Senate Budget Committee released a discussion draft for an amended version of the ACHA entitled Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA). Here, there are minor changes done to allegedly improve the ACHA.
