Medicare Annual Enrollment Period / AEP starts October 15 and ends on December 7 every year. This is the period when Medicare beneficiaries can review their current plan. Moreover, they can switch to a different Medicare contracted private insurance carriers for their medical and prescription drug coverage if they see fit.
With over 13 million Medicare beneficiaries nationwide, 27% of this population enrolls on Medicare Advantage plans. In Oregon, 41% of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled on the Medicare Advantage Plans. I’m not surprised that we have one of the highest enrollments for Medicare Advantage Plans in Oregon. Medicare Advantage covers what Original Medicare covers, embedded prescription drug plan and may offer more benefits such as dental, vision, wellness benefits, 24-hour nurse helpline, hearing aids, and more. Medicare Part A and Part B cover medical and hospital bills and both have deductibles.
As your independent plan consultant, we shop the Medicare plans market from dozens of private insurance companies. This is the time of the year when you need to review if your Medicare insurance plan went up on premium, deductibles, co-pays, or co-insurance. You can do this in a few ways. You can change or enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan or by joining a new stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan (PDP). Moreover, you can also go back to Original Medicare with or without a stand-alone Part D plan from a Medicare Advantage plan during this time. If you have Medicare Advantage, you can also switch to Original Medicare. To get Medicare drug coverage, you can join a stand-alone Part D plan at this time. If you enroll in a plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, your coverage starts January 1 the following year.
