Private Health Insurance Enrollment in Oregon

Have you wondered why thousands of Oregonians remain uninsured?

One of the reason is because they failed to enroll for private health insurance during the open enrollment period. And that’s just sad. Many are now facing the consequences for their inaction by experiencing thousands upon thousands of dollars in mounting medical bills that must be paid for out of pocket. Compounding the problem, many of those uninsured did not qualify for the Oregon Health Plan as well.

As we know,

When the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2013, most Oregonians are required to apply for private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace or directly through the private insurance companies. This is during a limited open enrollment period which normally starts November 1st and ends December 15th of each year.

However…

Even with limited time period and despite failing to apply for coverage, there are exceptions to this mandate. And yes you read it right! And exceptions include changes to anyone’s household living conditions within the next or last 60 days.

These include:

  • newly married couples
  • having a baby
  • adopting a child
  • getting divorced or legally separated
  • death
  • change of permanent residence
  • change in income
  • gaining U.S. Citizenship or legal immigration status in the country
  • release from incarceration

In addition to that…

Oregonians may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if they’ve lost health insurance coverage

due to LOSING:

  • a job
  • individual private health insurance coverage for a plan
  • eligibility for Medicaid better known as Oregon Health Plan
  • eligibility for Medicare
  • coverage through a family member
