Questions to Ask When Choosing a Health Insurance Plan

When choosing a health insurance plan you’ll need to compare the coverage each plan provides. You need to consider lots of things and should be ready with list of questions as your guide to make sure you are getting the health plan that best fits you. You should ask questions that specifically apply to your health care needs and based on your current health situation.

What to ask? Here are some examples:

How much it cost?  Ask for your monthly premium and see how much will be your copay, deductibles and out of pocket costs. Also find out if you qualify for tax credit or financial help to lower the cost of your health coverage. Learn more about tax credit at

What benefits are included?

You can ask for benefits summary to see what are the benefits you can get – if it covers mental and behavioral needs, chiropractic manipulation, vision, dental and other services you might need.

I take certain medication. How is that covered under this plan?  You can list medications you take and ask if those are under your plan’s formulary and see if you need to pay copays in getting those drugs. Every health insurance company has its own list of covered prescription drugs that you can check.

Can I stay with same doctor?   If you have a preferred doctor you want to continue to see, make sure he/she is included in the plan’s network. If your doctor is not covered, the insurance company may not cover bill or may require you to pay higher cost.

What happens if I get sick when traveling abroad?  For those who travels a lot, there are health plans that can still get you covered but most just covers emergency care so make sure to ask.

Am pregnant, what maternity services are covered?  You can check if prenatal and postnatal care is covered under the plan. If deductibles apply to prenatal care or if co-insurance applies to provider’s delivery charges.
